This is a truly memorable F1 review experience. June 25, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
1982 was a year of superb close action racing, of ground effect and of terrible tradegy. Its nice to know that formula one today is so much safer, that aside I dont believe modern formula one gives you the overtaking or race action that you had from this period. I love seeing the legends of Lauda, Prost and Piquet not to mention Mansell, Pironi and Rosberg (the Champion) all battling wheel to wheel. You could never predict a race win back then, no launch control at the start line killing all the fun at the start, no pit lane speed limits, no 10 place driver penalties, and backmarkers that had to be overtaken with skill not flagged out of the way. Bring back this kind of racing and keep todays safety. Anyone agree? Oh and I love Clive James's commentarys they are so witty and informative. Top stuff!
Why F1 is the way it is today November 10, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This excellent video catches F1 at a terrible and turbulent time, when innovation had reached a point where things looked like spiralling out of control. Eyes that are used to the look of modern day F1 racing will open wide in amazement at the sight of these cars, held down by their Ground Effect aerodynamics so that they can run with the tiniest wings - even sometimes no front wings at all - on tracks with no curbs nor gravel traps, but nothing but grass banks and wire catch netting to keep out-of-control hardware and spectators apart. The visual coverage is excellent, considering the age of it, and the commentary, although not as good as that on the 83 video, is also very good. Although Clive James does tend to tell you what you are going to see before it happens, he is at least drily entartaining with it, and better that the dull monotone of other commentators in the series. It is also worth noting that he deals with the truly harrowing footage of the deaths of Villeneuve and Palletti with a sensitivity that demonstrates his deep respect for the drivers and, I believe, a real love of the sport. In short, this video shocked me, but also entertained, and gave me a much better understanding of why modern F1 is the way it is now.
Close Championship in Formula One.. Marred by Tragedy November 19, 2000 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
The season started with drivers not wanting to go anywhere, over a small arguement with officials...When the season finally got under way the season went all over the place... an arguement at Imola between Foca and FIA caused only a handful of cars to turn up, and which saw Gilles Villenueve last race, for he was killed during Qualifying for Zolder.... Patrick Tambay took over from Villenueve some 4 races later.... even though at Canada, tradegy happened again... as Ricardo Paletti was also killed when he hit Pironi's stalled ferrari from behind... the rest of the season was manic... the end of the season questionable.. and had all the drivers who were injured or killed, not... would the results have been different? overall it's a season that is memorable in some ways.. others... forgetable...
