 Excellent value January 9, 2009
I'll keep this review simple, as the others before me have already explained in detail. This is a pretty good Blu-Ray player. No question about Sony quality, and it's an excellent value for what it delivers.
The real important thing you should know:
- Video quality is amazing, brilliant! To be fair, it's pretty much due to the Blu-Ray quality over DVD quality, not so much of this particular player. And remember, to enjoy all the beauty of this technology, you do need a good TV (LCD or Plasma) of at least 32inches in my opinion.
- The same applies for Audio, the Blu-Ray quality is top top, but to enjoy it you must have a AV receiver (i.e. Home Cinema / Theatre). You won't experience too much of an improvement out of your TV speakers (no matter how good your TV is, I'm afraid);
- Blu-Ray IS SLOWER THAN DVD to read. But here's something nice about this particular player, it's a bit faster than its competitors (however still slower than DVD, but you can accept that, because the image/sound is sooooo much better).
Conclusion: If you have a nice TV / sound system, you should definitely consider getting a Blu-Ray player (and giving away your DVD player, as you can play DVDs on the Blu-Ray one). And in this case, this model is the best value for your money.
PS: An extra thing for SONY users. It has BRAVIA Sync, so you can control all your SONY stuff (TV, AV receiver, Handycam etc) from any remote control.
 Excellent value for money with minor limitations January 2, 2009
This entry-level player provides great picture and sound. I have just two gripes (hence why I'm not giving it the full five stars). Updating the firmware is a pain when your router is located on the other side of the house. There is no wireless connectivity (unlike Sony's PS3) and a network cable is necessary. Despite having component inputs on my desktop (which is near my router) I've been unable to get it to display a picture so I can monitor the menu when updating.
Also, the 'resume play' function has not worked on any Blu-ray disc I've tried. A single press of the 'stop' button should enable the player to remember where you were to continue an interrupted viewing. Not so in my experience, I'm afraid: a full reload is required every time.
However, these quibbles should not detract from the player's merits. It really is a first-class machine. A couple of tips: for full 1080p DVD upscaling to work, you must select the appropriate menu option as it's set on 'auto' by default and will play DVDs at 480p unless changed. Finally, no HDMI cable in the box, which I think is usual anyway for this type of product.

I brought this about a month ago having read the what hi-fi review on it.I had been waiting for a good quality sony blu-ray player to come out (as what hi-fi had not been to kind to sonys other efforts up to now)and this was finally it from what they said.I set it up to my newly purchased 26inch v4000 and wasnt dissapointed.The picture and sound were outstanding.It also upscales standard dvds to 1080 making the quality of them brillaint.Its a bargain sony player for under 200 quid.You really cant go wrong with this player.

This is a fantastic offering from Sony. Of particular note is the amazing upscaling of standard definition DVDs. I bought a few Blurays to replace Standard DVDs and played them sequentially. I am sure the Blurays must be better, but in all honesty I couldn't see THAT much difference.
The startup time is a bit longer than a standard DVD.
I have a Sony Bravia TV (18 months old) , and was a bit disappointed that they did not communicate directly as promised in the manual, but this is more to do with 'obsolescence' of the TV.
