stay away from this camera April 27, 2010 Aldo Pignotti (Winchester, MA United States) I got about two years of light use out of my Sony DCR-HD96. Now, tapes won't load and Sony wants $220 to LOOK at the problem. I believe it is a minor adjustment issue with the tape loading mechanism but there is no way I'm going to spend $220 for Sony to just take a look at my camera. If they are going to sell cheesy equipment, they should charge accordingly. I paid a lot of money for this camera because I thought Sony equipment is reliable. Those days are gone, along with reliable Toyota cars!
Sound Died on Safari in Rwanda August 14, 2009 Murphy Crowson (Kigali, Rwanda) Took it on Safari in Rwanda. Shot great video of elephants, hippos, giraffes, etc. Got home, no sound. Imagine my frustration. Camera worked great for over a year, but then on an important trip, the sound stopped recording on the camera. Don't purchase if you want reliability for the long run. Great out of the box but didn't work when I needed it to work.
This has been the best single CCD camera I have seen July 13, 2009 Tony Pascale (north hollyqood, CA USA) This camera is using a full sized 1/3 CCD and that makes a different compared to others that use a smaller one. I have used this camera for some DvD's and it looks great. It does lack in low light being only a single CCD. Now if it was a 3 CCD at that size it would own. The touch screen is easy to learn and the manual is straight forward so that any level of user can understand. keep the heads clean and the camera clean it will last a good life. invest in filters for it and a stereo mic like the Sony ECMHST1 and that's what I use. Over 500 lines of resolution. The only draw back is that it needs the handycam station to transfer via firewire. There are more pros and cons but I still use it from time to time when not shooting in HDV. With the Sony remote control trip pod VCT-D680RM you can control the camera from the handle. I wish I had gotten two of them when I did. Amazon was the cheapest price anywhere.
All Time Classic HandyCam December 30, 2008 Avinash Bokksum Raghavendra Hello Everybody,
I bought this camera after a long and hard research from various manufacturers and it turned out to be a jewel. This is one of the rare handycams from Sony which can be used for all the occasions! With its 1/3 inch CCD it can capture beautiful low light video. Sony has discontinued this product and not only that we can't get a 1/3 inch CCD sensor handycams for this cheap at all!. With amazing image stabilization the video is awesome but the stills are just too good for a video camera. The only negative point I can think of is that it is a MiniDV and you need to spend some time for recording videos into a DVD. But Hey! If you have one of those firewire tabletop DVD burner/players, you can record the images hassle free!
Great Camcorder for first time users and new parents August 16, 2008 FY & T We did a lot of research for several months before purchasing this MiniDV Digital camcorder.
It's a lightweight piece that gives you enough options without overwhelming a first time user. The 10x optical zoom has been appropriate, we really don't need more for what we use it for (charting our baby girl's days as she grows into a little girl). The night light is actually very good, we've used on a few occasions with surprisingly good results. The picture quality is beautiful even on a big screen television.
The bottom line is that you don't need to be a pro to figure this contraption and it's a great value for what you get.
