Best New Zealand Guide April 29, 2009 This book provides an incredible wealth of information, much of it visual. It really is a bargain for what you get as it is several books in one. As a travel guide, virtually every park, historical site, and place of interest is decribed with maps, detailed illustrations, and statistics that even the most experienced traveler will find of value. Regarding NZ history, there is an excellent overview that includes 7 pages of historical timeline. Much content is devoted to what makes NZ such a special place and why it is so desirable to travel there despite its remoteness. New Zealand's bounty of natural scenic wonders, unique flora, Maori culture, diverse climate, laid back lifestyle, and overall pacific flavour are all presented in a clear, detailed, informational, and user-friendly format. For anyone planning to travel to NZ, this book is highly recommended.
Quite useless April 1, 2009 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The first impression of this book is quite good - a lot of picture and some nice informations. Although this is the only positiv thing i can think about. During my stay in New Zealand i didnt use this book at all - i didnt carried it with me. Why? There are no in depth informations about anything in there. The maps are quite poor, no accurate informations about business hours from galleries, museums,... only informations like "daily" opened. Also no informations about entrance fee.
This book is okay if you want to get an quick overview what can be seen/ done in New Zealand. Its also okay if you want to read it in the bus/metro at home but its quite useless using it as travel guide.
So only 1 star because it doesnt fulfill the purpose of a travelguide with delievering informations during a journey.
Practical visual travel guide January 25, 2009 I was a first time traveller to New Zealand. From all the guides that I could find in the bookshop I found DK to be the best. Now that I returned from the trip, I can say I made the right choice by purchasing it. The guide gives you enough information to plan your trip covering most important questions. I found the photos and the little maps very useful.
I knew where I was going to stay and for me the dilemma was what to do there. The DK travel guide provided information about the main natural attractions together with photos, contact phone numbers and how to get there. Importantly, the guide provides a historical background of places with attractions that you might consider visiting.
The guide uses a simple fact based style. No personal impressions, no subjective judgements, just facts: photos, numbers, locations and history.
The guide is not complete, how could it be? However it offers you anything you need to plan the trip. Once I arrived in New Zealand I hired a car with a GPS, I obtained a more detailed touristic map and I did what I planned to do using the DK guide. It turned out to be great. It may be that for a detailed planner, it would be necessary to do more in depth research, but again this guide could be a good starting point.
I will use it next time I go to New Zealand.
Great New Zealand Pictures January 20, 2009 I enjoy the Eye Witness books after I get home from a trip. The pictures are very good.
Poor guide from a DK fan January 2, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is no help planning a trip to new zealand at all. I ended up discarding this book and buying the Frommers (fodors would also be better). Although DK is great for sightseein in a city, this Counrty book did not help you plan a trip, was very confusing, and skimmed over popular cities (queenstown, the most popular tourist attraction in south island receive 1.5 pages !) Skip this awful guide.
