Great pocket HD video cam, just not in low ligh condition August 12, 2010 A. Keiy I got 3 of those,2 for my relative with a new born child, they love it.
great battery life and they easy to replace (2*AA)
coms with HDMI cable and charger
BUT,
indoors footage with low ligh (not dark), just less than bright
the video lacks the crisp look
other than that, great unit
MOV files and audio needs to be tweaked. July 12, 2010 Conradical (TX) This camera is a great idea for impromptu family outings. It is very portable and extremely simple to operate. The boot up time is fast. This is also a rugged camera and it is splash proof. It takes SD cards. I use 8 and 16 gigabytes and i never have had to change them. What i mean is, every family outing or hike i have recorded, i have never had to change the card. I have always had plenty of room left on the SD card.
I only have a couple of complaints and they are Big ones. It takes MOV files which most windows software doesn't support. i finally purchased the Magix movie edit pro 16 and it handles these files ok. The other gripe that i have is the audio recording. The recording volume always has to be increased during editing.
Regarding the 60 frames per second I have never used that.
Before you buy, make sure you can edit MOV files. The software that comes with it for editing is a joke.
Unless you can find it for less than $100, there are much better choices! July 6, 2010 Robert M. Zumatto (NEW YORK, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this in May as a gift for a friend. I got it at a very good price, and when I got to hold it, I was very impressed with the build quality, especially the rubberized exterior, the fact that it came with rechargeables AND a charger, and it's portability...it fits in my pants pocket much better than the Flip Ultra. Anyway, the recipient claims he "loves it",yet never uses it. I've had several chances to take it for a spin, and I know why it's just collecting dust at home: it's NOT user friendly! I was unable to intuitively take a video, then view it, and I consider myself tech savvy at the least. This should be the simplest function! Then, if you press the wrong button, a series of folders and subfolders (??)appears, and still it is not readily apparent how to access these folders. Now, I'm not going to describe each button and what it does, mainly because the camcorder is not in my possession. But I will say, that compared to the Flip, this is a pain to use, and you must read the instructions entirely and keep them handy if you want the best results possible.
Of course the most important thing that a camcorder should do is take good video. Now the Kodak is a 720HD, and the playback on the LCD is excellent, however when I play it on a PC, the picture quality is OK, but it's way too grainy, although I will say that the colors are very vivid. The Flip Ultra without HD takes a much clearer video. So if you can live with an HD camcorder that takes lower quality video than a standard definition AND you can find it under $100 (or under $70 :), go for it. Hope this helps a bit. I'll upload a sample video soon.
Breaks in your pocket & Kodak warranty won't fix it. July 4, 2010 Lucas A. Miller (East Coast) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this camera for my deployment to Iraq. It was in my cargo pants pocket one day I took it out and the lens was cracked and the silver trim ring had fallen off. I don't know how it broke but it did. Anyways when I got home I contacted Kodak to fix it. They said "Customer induced damage to the camera voids the warranty" they want $63 + $10.95 + tax to fix it OR I can send it to them and they will take 15% off a new camera if bought from the Kodak store. No thanks, first and last time I'll buy a Kodak camera. It's going to be a nice paperweight.
Decent But Not Exceptional July 4, 2010 Jon L 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
To keep this short, I will merely list the pros and cons
PROS
1. Great HD when in good lighting
2. Easy To Use
3. Weather Resistant
CONS
1. Terrible (and I mean terrible) low light HD video. Comparable to mere VGA video. Having bought this HD camcorder primarily for low light HD video, I might have chosen differently had I known this.
2. You need to buy a separate SDHC card for this (without it you'll get 30 seconds of HD video TOPS)
3. Battery Life is under 2 hours...so bring spares
4. Saves in .mov format.
5. USB cable not standard (it is provided but not standard)
6. Screen is a little small, could have improved in that department for sure (but you get what you pay for I suppose)
OTHER
1. Decent but not exceptional audio
All in all, the Kodak Zx1 is a good product for the price it is placed at. However, if your primary use is in low light conditions or indoors I would caution that the video quality dips significantly in these conditions and would advise against this particular model (as I don't have another HD camera in this price range I have no suggestions as to what you should get instead unfortunately). Otherwise, from my experience thus far, it is a decent camcorder and am (again overall) rather satisfied with this purchase.
