Product Description The Fuji Film FinePix S1000fd's 12x optical zoom lens expands your shooting reach, covering a remarkable focal range of 33-396mm, bringing you close enough to capture subtle expressions. The single built-in lens means you're always ready to shoot, with no need for bulky extra lenses or time-consuming lens changes. Picture Stabilization mode automatically sets the optimum shutter speed and sensitivity for each scene, preventing blur from camera shake or fast-moving subjects, even in low-light situations. Super Macro mode lets you move in as close as 2cm (0.8") making it easy to take high-impact full-frame close-ups. The Panorama Shooting Mode makes it easy to create impressive panoramic photos. This mode captures and combines up to 3 consecutive shots, which are saved to the memory card as a panoramic picture. The FinePix S1000fd automatically detects and corrects unsightly red-eye reflections that often spoil flash photos of people. A large, high resolution LCD with 230K Resolution makes it easy to compose great shots and to see photo details when you play back captured images. The high-resolution LCD can display up to 100 picture images simultaneously in 10x10 array. Use this micro thumbnail view to instantly select specific photos to view or print. A selection of tailored shooting modes provide ideal settings for everything from shutter speed and exposure to white balance. 1/2.3 CCD Sensor File format - JPEG (EXIF Ver 2.2) Aperture - F2.8 - F6.4 (Wide) / F5.0 - F8.0 (Telephoto), max 5 steps in 1/3 EV increment Shooting Modes - Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night, Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Museum, Party, Flower, Text, and PS (Picture Stabilization) Shutter speed - 1/4 second to 1/2000 second in Auto mode Self-timer - 10 seconds and 2 seconds delay Dimensions - Width 4.1 x Height 2.9 x Depth 2.7 (102.5x73x67.8mm) Weight - 11.5 ounces (325 grams)

Great June 25, 2009 Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd 10MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Zoom This camera is great
High hopes June 19, 2009 I saw the s1500fd at a big box store recently. I was really impressed by the size and general ergonomics of this camera. I went looking for a reaonably priced s1000fd to try out. I was recently on a vacation where I took a Nikon D60 and Canon A720 and was looking for a lighter rig from the D60 for traveling. I had gotten someone a Fuji A2800 as a gift back in 2001 and was hoping for a much better experience.
The feel of the camera in your hand is very good. The EVF is usable but small. The 2.7" rear LCD seems to want to be touched when picking up the camera so fingerprint smudges will be common (get a protector). Fuji's menu systems are not as refined as most of the other players. The lens design does not permit attachment of a lens hood and it is not threaded to take filters. The largest concerns are around picture quality. There is visible grain/noise at most ISO settings under most conditions. The camera cannot handle strong backlighting and the EVF/LCD in those cases shows an image 2-3 stops brighter than it will actually record. High contrast scenes in general are not handled well.
In comparing images taken with the s1000fd and the A720 of the same subject under identical conditions it is clear that the Fuji sensor is just not picking up detail. You can see brickwork lines on a building a hundred feet away that are fairly clear on the A720 and just blotchy guesses on the Fuji. Highlights through a bush that were handled well on the A720 became starbursts on the Fuji. The Fuji sensor was strong on reds and yellows but very weak on bringing through blues and somewhat week on bring through greens. Although I ended up returning the model I had in a few days due to SD card read/write errors the largest problem with this camera is the paradox of unfulfilled potential.
You have a very nice sized and to hold camera with a decent lens. There are plenty of settings that an enthusiast would use. But the design fails to deliver on it's apparent promises by not supporting filters, a lens hood, adequate EVF or clean enough image quality for someone who would be attracted to this kind of platform ('bridge' camera). Often the red-eye remove cannot locate the eyes.
In summary I really like the design of this cameras body, perhaps the best of anything I am aware of. Canon has been doing very boring designs lately in the bridge/superzoom range. I suppose someone who has outgrown a P&S and wants to get into more control, like a teenager, may benefit from this camera. In past times I would have recommended a top of the line Canon A-series model like A720 or A590. But it appears Canon have abandoned the A-series to control-less P&S and am struggling in the new SX series getting things right. If you are looking for a bridge model then Panasonic FZ28/38? seems to be the stronger contender.
Fuji missed the mark June 16, 2009 Why do some camera manufacturers insist on using proprietary interfaces for consumer cameras? Fuji blew it yet again by not using the standard USB mini-B cable but designing yet another special connector that doesn't interchange with anything else, even on their own models. There doesn't seem to be a technical reason for this, since this is not a tiny camera, tight for space.
The special cable alone would be enough reason to stay away from this camera, but Fuji double-cursed this little critter with a difficult to work battery cover with fragile catches. These catches are molded into the bottom of the camera body as well as the battery cover. Should these break, as mine have, you will either need to replace the entire body housing, which would, no doubt, cost more than the camera is worth, or toss it in the garbage and buy another camera. I'm betting when you do, it won't be another S1000FD.
If you haven't bought one yet, save yourself the hassles and look for something else. Life's too short to spend rewarding manufacturers for bad design.
Fugifilm Finepix S1000fd June 8, 2009 Awsome Camera, this little unit puts the "big boys" to shame! This is a great camera for a great price, it can "keep up" with cameras that cost 4 or 5 times as much. Buy it, you wont be sorry.
Great camera for the price June 4, 2009 I have had this camera for about 6 months. I have taken over 6,000 pictures with it and know the in and outs of the camera. I love most of the features and the way my pictures look. I have taken pics at night, in the fog, and in most conditions. It has a feature that allows you to take multi pics at once in the full 10mp. I use this feature all the time and it helps me get the picture I want. The only con to this camera is not being able to auto focus. I do like to take pictures of birds and not being able to focus has been a down side. Overall for the price, I love this camera and I take it with me where ever I go.
