The 42-inch Pioneer PDP-4270HD plasma television delivers large, lifelike images right out of the box, thanks to the built-in ATSC (digital) tuner that can pick up over-air high-def channels with an optional antenna. You can also hook up an HDMI-capable cable or satellite set-top box and enjoy the highest standard of high-definition audio and video--with only a single cord connection. Nicely compact, it features a bottom mounted speaker design that makes it easy to fit into a home theater cabinet with a smaller footprint. Pioneer's exclusive Crystal Emissive Layer is sandwiched between the plasma glass and the individual light cells. This advanced layer helps conduct energy more efficiently so that each cell can be charged and discharged three times faster than before. Pioneer's Advanced Continuous Emission IV (ACE IV) works in conjunction with the Crystal Emissive Layer in the glass to reduce the visual steps between levels of color, making color transitions smoother than ever before. It also offers both vertical and horizontal ribs that help keep the light focused and concentrated, and prevent it from bleeding into neighboring cells. This cell structure means a brighter, sharper, and more accurate image that consistently reminds you of the reasons you bought a plasma TV in the first place. The PDP-4270HD features a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution (meaning that 1080p signals via the HDMI connection will be downscaled) and a wide 160-degree viewing angle. This Pioneer PureVision plasma TV uses Pure Drive II, 10-bit all-digital processing that maintains a digital path throughout signal processing. This streamlined Pure Drive process provides an optimal picture with virtually no video noise or loss of quality. HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections . Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience. - Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.

Its a shame that pioneer threw in the towel..Picture quality wise, no one comes close to Plasma, this is even better than 1080p lcds, leds.
Get any while they last on amazon..

I did a ton of research before selecting the Pioneer 4270HD -- reading through the mind-numbing pages on electronics forums (e.g., AVS and a dozen others), performance reviews, and of course, in-person "kicking the tires" at my local BB and Circuit City stores. The other models I considered were the equivalent 720p Panasonic and Samsung models. (I had decided to go with plasma early on, for its ability to render more natural image compared to the LCDs.) When I was making the purchase, Pioneer was about to introduce the 8th generation line, the KURO, and I was very tempted to wait and splurge on the KURO -- I mean, *everybody* that knew anything about TVs said the Kuro represented a full generational upshift from the mere 7th generation line, to which the 4270 belonged. Given the substantial price difference, however, I decided to stick with my decision and order the 4270, and I never regretted it. If I had unlimited budget and had to have the "true HD" 1080p, I might have gotten the 50" Kuro. However, this is a 42" unit which would eventually be moved to my bedroom when we move to a bigger place. I will buy a 1080p when I'm in the market for a 60" plasma.
Why did I pay a premium over comparable Panasonics and Samsungs? Other than the reviews that all pointed to the Pioneer's unparalleled performance and also the "prestige" factor, I thought the colors on this unit were just so much more natural. I calibrated the unit when it arrived using the settings (the "D-Nice" settings on AVS) posted online, and never ran a burn-in disk. The calibration was spot-on, and it's just unbelievable. And I've never had burn-in on this unit.
The only issue with this TV has been the low-humming noise emanating from the back of the unit when the volume is set low (as reported by some people on forums). But this is never really noticeable when you're watching regular TV.
Amazon delivered this TV through a third-party mover, and they were fine to deal with. Came when they said they would, unpacked and left. The movers do not work in pairs, however. My team was just one guy. I would be a bit worried if this guy was moving a 60" unit by himself, but this is a 42, so it was fine.
Not sure if Pioneer will be able to sustain the significant price gap between their line and competitors' models. But if you can afford it, Pioneer is the Rolls Royce of HDTVs. I love mine.

I am not an electronic geek, however, I do enjoy having the best quality product for my money and being satisfied with my purchase. I research as much as possible from as many different sources I can this is what I did when wanting a tv for my master bedroom. Pioneer is definitely, a leader in plasma, higher priced but worth the wait for a good deal. I paid $1195.00 for my 42 inch plus shipping. It was offered through Tiger Direct, I ordered through Amazon as Pioneer said that Tiger Direct was`not on their acceptable factory warranty list and Amazon was, also shipping was less than half through Amazon. It arrived by truck line, great driver brought into the entry way, he even waited and helped me unpack to make sure there was no damage ( he stated he was not obligated to do this) It was perfect, my husband hung it on the wall within an hour with the adjustable brackets we purchased, tilts and slides under 10.00 bucks. Walla!!!!!! picture so great you think you are there.

I did extensive research before purchasing a new TV and decided to go with a plasma over a LCD. Of all the brands the Panasonic and Samsung were the two on the top of my list. The only reason Pioneer was not there was due to price. When the price of this set came down to the same levels as the comparable units from Panasonic and Samsung I made the jump to Pioneer. I can not compare the other units against each other as this is the first plasma that I have ever owned, however, this TV is great. Most channels are only going to be as good as the SD reception is from your cable provider or the station itself. I can tell you that of the 70 or so channels that I do get at least half are of great quality on this set. It also does a great job of taking SD and making it look great. Those that do not come in as good on this TV also demostrate this same lower quality on my CRT TVs.
I have noticed a couple of reviews on this site that mention burn in as a problem and I was hesitent at first concerning this issue. I can safely say I think that these were isolated incidents that had to do with either the users failure to follow guidelines concering the use of lower viewing settings during the inital 100 or so hours of use with the set, or unfortunately just a bad TV. But considering the limited number of people I see having this problem I would think that it was not the fault of the set. Just glad I have not experienced any such problem.
After getting everything hooked up I viewed a movie using component inputs at 480i and was very impressed with the image quality even at this lower setting. Skin tones were especially good as were the blue and greens of the sky and grass. Exceptional for a lower setting of 480i.
The connections on the TV are great for my needs. Acceptable amounts of component,HDMI, PC and even a USB which is great to use with my digital camera. The front speakers which are integrated on the bottom of the set are above average sounding and in my opinion are better than most that come with other brands. The TV Guide function is also great idea that works well for me and is very handy.
As mentioned in several other reviews the remote is a little large and some user function require more input than I think should be necessary to accomplish certain functions. But hey, if you want a different remote you can always purchase one that you like better without breaking the bank so this is a minor issue in my opinion.
All in all this was a great buy for me and I have been very pleased with the Pioneer PDP 4270HD. I would gladly recommend getting one of these sets if you are in the market. But you might want to make it quick as this is an end of production model and I am sure at the price they are currenly selling for (they have actually went up around $200 in the last couple of weeks) they are not going to be around for long.
By the way bought this from Amoazon though TIger Direct. Fast shipping and product arrived in perfect condition. Highly recommend both.

Pioneer is truly an excellent company. And that reflects no more then in their Plasma televisions. While all Plasma T.V.'s are stuning, you wont notice a difference in quality until age settles in. While all plasma's look great out of the box, the pioneer will truly come into it's own in the following years. The cheaper Plasma brands such as VIZIO, AKAI, SAMSOUNG, and others wont maintain a quality picture past about 3-7 years, depending on how often it is used. 3 years if used as an every day regular T.V. watched about 6 hours a day. 7 if only used to watch movies or 2-3 hours of T.V. per day.
Pioneer on the other hand, as well as other "High End" brands will last well over 10 years, even while being watched 6 hours a day, and still keep outstanding picture quality. I know this for a fact because my Grandparents Bought a Pioneer plasma in 1997 and it still looks just as good as it did when they first got it. My uncle on the other hand got a VIZIO in 2000, and had to replace it in 2004 because the picture was so bad.
That is where the difference is. Not just how good the quality is, but how long the quality will last.
