Running like a champ well into year 5 August 8, 2010 Pepin Torres (Waltham, MA (USA)) This printer has surpassed my expectations. I have been using it as my family's main printer for almost five years without any real trouble. The drum life is still at a very healthy 75%. Yes, it is loud, hot and power-hungry** , but it is also quick and pages come out looking very nice (this printer is superb when it comes to text, but not recommended if hi-res B/W images are required.) Like previous reviewers have stated, this printer is discontinued but I agree that unless it breaks down completely, there is no reason to spend money on another. I must tip my cap to Brother for keeping all the drivers available and updated on their site after all these years. I am especially grateful that they provide thorough information on how to install their Windows and Linux drivers. All in all, not a bad purchase - which is funny because when I was on the checkout line holding the printer, the guy behind me said: "Don't buy that printer. Brother is horrible." I beg to differ.
** This printer's power hunger helped me realize that my house's neutral wire was not connected properly - a possible fire hazard. Every time I printed something the house lights would flicker. After a while, I asked someone how could this little printer make my whole house flicker. That's when the topic of loose neutral wires started, so I called my electric company to checkout my house. Indeed, someone had left the neutral loose at the service's entrance point. Now, no more flicker and no danger. Make sure your neutral wire are tightly connected!
great printer May 28, 2010 Carl Albarran (USA) it's overall a great printer, easy to use, plug and play really. i love all Brother's products. i would recommend this product. though i would buy a color printer with a scanner next time. only black and white isn't the most useful these days.
oh but it's pretty heavy.
excellent value March 19, 2010 buy by reviews (Houston, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have had this for several years now, and am still very happy with it. Small foot print, good quality laser printing, inexpensive. If your printing needs are small to moderate, I highly recommend this model. High usage = more $$$$ for your needs. It is fairly noisy and the lights go slightly dimmer when it starts to print; but no big deal to me. It works and at a great price. I will never go back to an ink-jet.
Wonderful Work-Horse January 19, 2010 Kenny G. Blackmon I have had this printer for two years and I have never had any trouble with it. The printer has only jammed paper 13 times in that time period and I have only had to replace the toner once. The toner replacement was super easy and practically took three steps. When I purchased this printer, it was $89.99 and at that time it was an unbeatable bargain. I use it networked with a few computers in my house. It works nicely with Linux, OS X, XP, Vista, and Windows 7. I couldn't have asked for a better printer in terms of value. The web interface is clunky and may require networking experience to setup.
One of my biggest complaints about the printer is that it is super noisy and that the cooling fan stays on quite a while after each print job.
For the value and quality, it's a definite buy.
4 years and running November 30, 2009 Lukasz 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We have had it for over 4 years and it still works great. We probably print under 50 pages/month on average. It's much faster than our old ink-jet and since it's networked, much easier to share between multiple computers.
