The CCD-TR416 camera features Sony's exclusive Extended Resolution System. Instead of the usual 240 lines of Horizontal Resolution delivered by VHS or VHS-C, 8mm XR provides up to 280 lines of resolution. New 18x Optical/180x Digital Zoom brings the action up close from far away. This Sony camcorder has the stamina to record up to 14 hours on one optional battery (NP-F950). Also included is Rechargeable InfoLithium Battery with AccuPower Meter System that continuously displays the amount of power remaining in minutes, in the viewfinder.With Sony's NightShot System you can capture video even when shooting in total darkness (0 lux) up to 10 feet away using the built-in infrared system. Add creativity to your movies with 8 Picture Effects, such as Slim, Stretch, Mosaic, Solarization, Black and White, Sepia, Neg. Art and Pastel. Control L (LANC) connects Sony VCR's and editing controllers for precise control and ease of use during editing. Sony also allows the user to display any of the camcorders preset titles in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese. Sony's 6 Program AE modes will make all of the necessary settings to the shutter speed, aperture and focusing for a variety of indoor and outdoor situations. These AE modes consist of Portrait Mode, Sports Lesson Mode, Spotlight Mode, Beach and Ski Mode, Landscape Mode, and Sunset and Moon Mode. Optimum Record Control, when activated, will perform a short record and playback of the inserted videotape to analyze the tape and to check the condition of the video heads. 16: 9 Recording allows the user to record in a true "widescreen" aspect ratio. This will become even more important as consumer TVs adopt the widescreen format.

I own this one, and finally after ~10 years of moderate use it seems to be dying (suddenly no recording or playback). This camera is a good one for the purpose (easy to use, a pretty good quality of recording), but it is not a Hi8 format, but a lower Video8XR [...]. It is essentially the same format as the original Video8, but "with 10% improvement in luminance detail while retaining full backward compatibility with older, non-XR equipment. XR recordings were fully playable on the older equipment, though without the benefits of XR". By the way, the format is clearly shows in one of the shots.
So you get a pretty good Video8 camera, but not a Hi8 one!

I have owned this camera for a few years now and I think all of the features and quality are the best around. The newer Sony hi8 cameras don't even have this many features!
The BEST! November 30, 1999
This camcorder is wonderful, anyone who buys it will love it I'm sure. Your fingers soon become familiar to the controls.It is also a good price for its great quality. I highly reccomend this to anyone who is just starting Filming.

Without comparison, this camcorder won hands-down. I don't like LCD screens anyway since I'm used to 35mm format, so the color viewfinder won out over the more costly LCD easily. The camera is lightweight and handles like a camera. The special effects are amazing! The quality of the Sony is way better than other brands, in my opinion, from the ergonomics to the menu displays and ease of use. The only drawback is that image stabilization isn't included on this model, but a tripod takes care of that problem, especially filming long zooms. The Nightshot feature is amazing and gives good results. Sony definitely is the leader and this model is more than enough for my needs!
