works well but some quirks December 5, 2009 Harry L. Criswell Jr. I've had this frame for about a year and a half.
I've loaded the SD card with 100+ photos and it does seem to display most of them. I've noticed that it will suddenly turn off after several photos. Another reviewer said it happens with over 100 photos. Maybe I'll reduce my number and see what happens.
The resolution is 720x480 at 133ppi. If your photos don't fit that ratio they will be cropped for display. I've started using GIMP to edit & resize copies of my photos for this frame so I can control what gets cropped. I'm matching the size and resolution, thinking it probably reduces the processing time in the device to display an image. Not that it is slow, but since I'm resizing my photos anyway...
There is a time lag between when you shut it off and when you can successfully turn it back on. Usually I just unplug it for a few minutes, then I can turn it back on. There is newer firmware available but I have not been able to update it. I had hoped the firmware update would fix some of the issues.
Your photos are just one big list with not ability to arrange them by category or directory. This is not a problem for me but I see some people expected some ability to organize other than by file name. Also apparently some think there is a battery. Well not on this model. I didn't notice any mention of a battery when I bought it but I guess it's in the Amazon specs somewhere.
Overall it does what I wanted so I like it. I'll just have to remove some of old photos to keep my number of photos down (if that turns out to help).
Awesome Screen... February 12, 2009 Luis Hurtado (San Diego, CA) Bought this for a gift and they loved it. One of the best looking frames out there. Will go with any decor.
Disappointed, multiple problems February 4, 2009 Q. Chang 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I was emotional last month, I really wanted to give it only one star. Now I have cooled down and add one more star on it, because after all it provides high-resolution pictures when it works.
I purchased 3 of this Philips electronic photo frames. My choice was largely based on the 100+ good reviews. I wish some reviewers could have opened their eyes wider because some of the problems/shortcomings are always there, not because I had bad luck -
** The screen of my 2nd frame was out of order after 15min of use
** The frame cannot handle portrait ratio photos - some photos look ok, but in most situation, head and foot will be cut - and how much to be cut is not up to you
** The frame cannot handle reasonable number of photos. In each of my CF or SD card, I put about 200~250 photos (I made each photo as small as 100~200k). I found that after photo 100, the frame start to gradually "lose" photo - it couldn't open some of them. The problem becomes more and more serious - at 170 or later, no photo can be opened!
** No menu function at all. No matter how you arrange you photos in your card, they come out in a big pool from the frame
** When I purchased my frame, the product feature said it has an internal rechargeable battery - in fact it does not exist
I ask you to think about the problems before you purchase it. If any of the above points is mistaken, please point out in the comments section. Thanks.
Satisfied User January 20, 2009 Randall Call (Salt Lake City, Utah) This was a good product. Easy to download software. I wish I would have bought a larger screen as the display is quite small.
Nice and easy January 14, 2009 J. Love (San Francisco) Purchased this frame as a gift for my wife's parents. Setup was straightforward and easy. Added an SD card, copied a selection of our own pics to it, and shipped it on to them. They simply plugged it in and it was working. Nice size for a desk or mantel. Good quality presentation. I would choose this same frame again if purchasing a second.
