How it works September 2, 2010 Charles (NC) I purchased this case so I would have a compact but useful way to take my GPS with me on vacation a few times per year. My current, much-liked GPS mount is the standard Garmin clamp and suction cup attached to a donut-shaped, 3rd-party dashboard pad. It works great when sitting in my car. Not so great for travel because the mount doesn't flatten out in any way and the donut is bulky and heavy.
I bought this case with the understanding that the TSA is probably going to stop and inspect it. A dense package wrapped with a power cord should raise their concerns. Just another one of the joys of modern travel.
Please see my customer photos to clarify this description. My case came with two 2x2-inch velcro tape pads, and a similarly sized velcro spacer about 1/4-inch thick. I have a Garmin nuvi 255W, which has the power port on the back of the unit and an angled USB power cord. I trimmed the two pads to fit on the flat parts of the back of the unit, staying clear of the power port, the speaker opening just under the power port, and leaving the middle clear so I can continue to use the Garmin clamp with my existing mount. With the spacer on the same side as the power cord, the cord still sticks out a little bit further than the velcro. Even so, the back of the case is flexible enough to get a pretty good grip on both sides of the unit. It looks like it should hold well.
Using any kind of tape in a hot car is going to be a problem. There are a few things you can try to maximize the life of the adhesive. Clean the back of the GPS with a cotton pad moistened with rubbing alcohol to remove any oil residue and let dry thoroughly. Apply the tape pads firmly to get a good adhesion. Do not put the unit into the case or otherwise stress the tape until you've allowed 24 hours or so for the adhesive to set up. (Disclaimer here: this worked for me. Be smart and careful with your GPS. Not responsible for damage. This is free advice, worth every penny and nothing more.)
If you want to remove the sandbag, there's an opening on the rubberized side of the case. Just open the velcro and pull it out. It's a little tight, but the bag is very malleable. I didn't have any trouble removing or replacing it.
Be prepared for ungluing issues August 10, 2010 Denise (Long beach, ca) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked everything about this Nav pack, it's compact, has adjustable snaps so the screen doesn't glare, and zips up into a nice little pouch. However the glue that you attach the velcro adhesive to is useless. Anything over 68 degrees and that damn thing just slides right off. My passengers are always amused when instinctively I just grab my falling GPS and push it back into place about 10 times an hour. So I don't recommend for hot weather states!
handy little case July 29, 2010 Shelly (Washington) This case is really handy to have if your primary use of a GPS is when you travel or are not in your own car. I purchased it for whan I travel to visit friends and family around the country and have a rental car and have no clue how to get where I need to go. The bottom of this case is secure on any surface I've used it on. The adjustable tilt angle is really nice. The only part of it I don't like is it always causes alarm when I pack it in my carry on at the airport. It's not really the product's fault, but rather the airport security (which is probably a good thing). Fortunately, the weighted bag can be removed and TSA has always been satisfied with seeing that.
Works well for traveling July 24, 2010 Samuel Mandel (New Jersey) I bought this case for storage and as a dashboard mount for a trip to California, where, I am advised, window mounts are prohibited. The case worked well as a dashboard mount on the 2 cars that I rented with very little slippage. All things being equal, I would have preferred a window mount for optimum visibility. My Magellan Roadmate 3000 fit perfectly in the case. I adjusted the Velcro attachment strips to retain access for my window mount. I had a small problem with the cord slipping out of the GPS, but this was a minor problem which occured mainly with my constantly removing the case from the dash when I left the car. This product is well worth the reduced price I paid for it.
GPS Case/Holder July 20, 2010 Thomas Adamski Provides nice off the dash protection for the GPS when not in use. A little difficult to mount the GPS inside the case if the back of the GPS is not flat. Overall I prefer it to the weighted beanbag type GPS holders.
